Coming from Coinbase Commerce?

Coinbase Commerce made crypto checkout simple for years, and then it began to wind down. If you are here, you probably need a new home for crypto on your site, one that still asks nothing of you to run. Here is the honest version of what moving to us changes.

What Coinbase Commerce did well

Coinbase Commerce gave you a hosted crypto checkout with a name buyers already trusted. You created a charge, the buyer paid in crypto, and you ran no infrastructure of your own. For a long stretch it was the easiest way to take crypto on a web page.

Why people are moving now

Coinbase Commerce stopped taking new merchants and is winding down, and its replacement is built for businesses in a short list of countries and holds the funds on your behalf. If you sell from outside that list, or you want the coins to land somewhere you control, you need a new place to point your button.

What stays the same

You still take crypto from a normal web page with no server to run. You still paste a button and let the checkout do the work. What changes is where the money lands and who is allowed to use it.

Where the coins land

There

In its current form, Coinbase holds the crypto and pays you out on its own terms, in the countries it serves.

Here, hosted

NOWPayments runs a hosted crypto checkout and settles to the wallet you set, with Monero, bitcoin, and most major coins in the picker.

Here, your own wallet

Or go non-custodial: MakePay and self-hosted Monero settle straight to a wallet you own, with no company in the middle at all.

Weigh it honestly

What you gain

  • Crypto that settles to an account or wallet you choose, not a custodian payout queue.
  • Cards and pay-by-mail in the same picker, so one button covers every buyer.
  • A flat monthly price, and 0% of your sales, ever.
  • An open-source SDK, so you are never locked in here either.

What you give up

  • The Coinbase name on your checkout page.
  • One dashboard run by a single large company; here you connect your own provider accounts.
  • Custodial handling, if having someone else hold the coins was the point for you.

How to make the move

  1. Choose how crypto should settle: hosted through NOWPayments, or non-custodial to your own wallet.
  2. Create a project and connect that crypto account, plus cards or pay by mail if you want them too.
  3. Add your products to the catalog: reference, name, price, currency.
  4. Paste one button per product where your old Coinbase Commerce checkout used to be.
  5. Run a test in test mode, then switch your links over and retire the old checkout.

Coinbase Commerce is winding down on its own schedule, so move before it stops settling. Export any records you need from its dashboard first, because our log starts with your first sale through us.

A fair case for staying

If you are a business it still serves and you are happy for Coinbase to hold the funds, its own successor is the official path forward, and we are not trying to be a custodian. This page is for everyone that setup leaves out.
